I'm not sure what my problem is, I just don't feel like posting all the wedding pictures yet. Partly, I'm sure, is because I don't want to think about it being over... not yet.
Since Kyle and I have been back from Hawaii we have been just getting back into the groove. Work is super busy for me, as I'm learning a new role now (circulator). This is what my primary job in the OR will be, as opposed to scrubbing, which is what I was doing pre-wedding. Scrubbing will be my secondary role in the OR, I learned this role 50% because it helped learn all the instrumentation and the other half because I will be scrubbing sometimes. Scrubbing is normally done by a technician and usually only done by an RN (at this hospital at least) when tech staffing is short.
Here is a brief description of each role, but remember that it's not all inclusive of the jobs of the roles. It is also important to know that different hospitals staff the OR in different ways. Some ORs only have RNs scrubbing into cases, and do not utilize technicians. When describing the different roles to someone once they expressed concern about the role of an OR Tech, saying that they'd rather have an RN but in my opinion a tech is equally, if not MORE, prepared than the RN to scub cases. Techs go to school to learn how to scrub into surgical cases and have a great knowledge base about surgical procedures and all of the materials used. The RNs formal educational training includes very little surgical material. Most is on the job training or continuing education courses. An RN, though, can do either role if properly trained. A tech cannot do the circulator role, as this role must be filled by an RN.
OR Nurse Circulator: Nurses in this field provide care and support to patients before, during, and after surgery. These nurses are responsible for maintaining a sterile environment in the operating room, monitoring the patient during surgery, and coordinating care throughout the process. They are also responsible for making sure the OR team provides the patient with the best care possible.
OR Scrub Tech: The scrub surgical technologist handles the instruments, supplies, and equipment necessary during the surgical procedure. He/she has an understanding of the procedure being performed and anticipates the needs of the surgeon. He/she has the necessary knowledge and ability to ensure quality patient care during the operative procedure and is constantly on vigil for maintenance of the sterile field.
Kyle has also been very busy at work. He moved locations and is no longer at the Amberglen building but now on the Hawthorne Farms Campus. I cannot speak much to Kyle's work :), besides to say they are super busy going into plan (whatever that means) and also a perk of the new location is the cafeteria.
